The next big thing in Beer and Marijuana
With Canada’s legalization of recreational Cannabis, there are new business opportunities arising: Beer and Marijuana. Add to that cocktails, coffee, tea or perhaps a Kombucha/Mary Jane combo, we have a party like never before seen!
Different parties have invested billions of dollars into research and development due to Cannabis legalization. Home brewers have been experimenting for years, but now Big Beer and big money can be invested into something that was previously just a - um, not legal - hobby.
Survey Says: Beer and Marijuana
A Statistics Canada 2016 Community health survey says: 17% of Canadians smoke, while almost 77% Canadians drink alcohol. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! No, put that in your beer and drink it.
Weed Beer or Hot Boxed Fart?
With the various methods of fermenting beer, in combination with the inclusion of so many different plants or plant parts, how do they do it? I mean, without it tasting like like a hot boxed fart?
While there are a few ways of brewing Cannabis beer, the provisional patent for the “world’s first beers brewed from the cannabis plant” has been filed by Province Brands. Weed beer recipes are in abundance on the internet, so any brewer can give it a try. Almost as many weed beer recipes exist as Grannie’s brownie recipe. (By the way, weed beer and brownies do sound like a great pairing).
Marijuana Beer please - hold the sugar, and the calories
A low calorie, no sugar high is what people are after. A THC infused sparkling water? Heineken’s Lagunitas is on it with their Hi-Fi Hops (https://sf.eater.com/2018/7/31/17635484/lagunitas-hi-fi-hops-thc-sparkling-water-beer)
Put the sativa in the lupulus and drink ‘em bot’ up
Cannabis sativa (marijuana) and Humulus lupulus (hops) are similar in taste and smell. Furthermore, they are two genera in the family Cannabinaceae. This means that back in the day of latin taxonomy, Cannabis and Hops looked alike, and as a result they were named in a single family. Now that Cannabis is becoming legal, it’s time to let these cousins play!
October 17, 2018 - Canada will be the second country in the world to legalize marijuana for recreational use. What are you brewing for the big day?
